Achieving salon-quality gel nails at home is entirely possible once you understand the three-layer system: base coat, color gel, and top coat — each cured under UV or LED light.
Preparation is Everything
Before applying a single drop of gel, your nails need to be completely oil-free. Use a lint-free wipe soaked in isopropyl alcohol and gently buff the surface to create micro-abrasions for adhesion. Skip this step and even the best gel won’t last past week one.
The Perfect Application
Apply your base coat in thin, even strokes — avoiding the cuticle and skin. Cure for 60 seconds. Repeat with color gel in two thin layers. Thin layers prevent shrinkage and lifting.
The secret to a three-week manicure isn’t the brand — it’s the prep and the thin layers.
Top Coat Matters
A high-shine top coat seals everything in and adds that glass-like finish. Cap the free edge (the tip of the nail) on every layer to prevent peeling from the ends.
Removal Done Right
Never peel! Soak a cotton pad in acetone, place it on the nail, wrap in foil, and wait 15 minutes. The gel should slide off with a gentle push from an orangewood stick. Follow with cuticle oil to rehydrate.
